One Great Thing About Nebraska: Spontaneous Patriotism
This act of spontaneous patriotism occurred at Captain Jack's Bar in Lincoln, Nebraska on June 23rd, 2010. The US national soccer team does something extraordinary in the ninety-first minute of a do-or-die World Cup match. These Nebraskans are very proud.

Awesome Hair -- Awesome Brain: Michel Foucault
Sometimes hair can be awesome in its absence. Compare the two pictures of French intellectual giant Michel Foucault below. Do I even have to ask which hairstyle is more awesome? And his brain? This guy was really ridiculously smart. He was like the Chuck Norris of thought. His work systematically proves that no one really has a clue what is really going on. He makes Malcom Gladwell sound like a confused child. Foucault actually knocked someone unconscious once by thinking something at him.

Foucault has been one of my number one guys for a long time. His life and work are absolutely facinating. I recommend Discipline & Punish: The Birth of the Prison
as his most accessible work. His History of Sexuality is a little more difficult. But it does explain fairly clearly exactly why everything you think you know about sex is wrong. The Order of Things: An Archaeology of the Human Sciences
, which explains absoluetly everything, reads like backwards upside-down Chinesse toaster blueprints. I do not recommend it because I have no idea what he is talking about.

Honduras Wins!
It was a great night for Honduras. We beat Mexico 1-0. I even saw a guy jumping up and down while screaming and firing his gun into the air. I felt like I was in a cartoon.

I didn't take my camera with me last night. But I had my cellphone. I only captured one picture worth posting. I don't usually take pictures of urinals, but I couldn't pass up the symbolism of this one:
A Mexican beer in a Honduran toilet.

I kind of think that Karine may make me take this picture down. We'll see.

Honduras vs. Mexico
It is impossible to overstate the impact of tonight's World Cup Qualifier between Honduras and Mexico on the future self-esteem of the Honduran people. Its a big game. This year's team has the best chance of qualifying in thirty years. And tonight's game will decide their fate.

The national soccer team matters here in Honduras in a way that is difficult for people in the United States to understand. Honduras is a small country with a rather heart-breaking history. But the Honduran national soccer team can compete with any nation on earth. And the Honduran people are very, very proud:

That video was shot by our friends Kimmy and Chris at friendly match between Honduras and Haiti last summer. Here's what happens when Honduras scores a goal. The things flying through the air are baleadas and beer:
We're hoping for a big win tonight. If the team triumphs, thousands of fans will drive though the streets of La Ceiba in one long conga line of cars. CiebeƱos will sing, scream, shoot their guns into the air, throw food and beer at each other, and dance on top of their cars until at least four in the morning.

I am venturing out into the city to watch the game tonight. I'll take my camera along and post what I see on the blog tomorrow. PS, people really do shoot their guns in the air when we win.

Extreme Home Makeover: Honduras
We've been busy putting La Casa Lewandowski together the past couple of days. Its a lot of work, but we're having fun and making progress. Karine has been organizing the kitchen.
I am in charge of chemical warfare. And I am winning.
Saturday is Independence Day here in Honduras. We're going to spend the day buying plants and putting things away, but we'll try to get out and see the sights a bit. I think part of the festivities in the city involve some kind of neighborhood marching band competition. The band in our neighborhood has been practicing every night and they are sounding GOOD. We'll see.
The Honduran national soccer team beat Ecuador in a "friendly" last night. That's the big news around town today. The big news for us though was friend chicken. That's what we had for our first official meal in our new home.
Hope everyone is well!
