Americans and America

Like I said, our North and South American brothers and sisters are not mad at us for calling ourselves Americans, they just think it's sort of typical of us, with our our giant vehicles and multinational corporations and cowboy military-industrial ethos, to name ourselves using like the biggest possible name. Well, almost the biggest, I guess we could call ourselves Earthlings or Western Hemispherians. But that just wouldn't sing the same way.

Mm, I have heard this complaint before, and I understand the perception that "it's typical of us." But really, of all the things for which we do deserve criticism (and we do), this one...well, maybe I just don't get it. The word "America" is part of the actual name of our country, so there's that. And in general, any group of people ought to reserve the right to name themselves. If people from any other country in the Americas wanted to refer to themselves as "American," I have no problem with that.

Anyway, I think you have a terrific new blog name. :)

BTW, Happy Birthday to Tom, today!
